I spent a week in Spain and the Guggenheim was on our bucket list to visit and what more to do that on a special sunny day!
I just had to share my experience! If you're heading to Spain anytime soon, this place NEEDS to be on your bucket list too!
So picture this - I'm walking along the river in Bilbao (cute city btw) with my husband and daughter and BAM! There it is... this massive, shiny, twisted metal building that looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie! The whole thing is covered in what looks like silver fish scales that catch the sunlight and practically glow. I must have taken like 50 photos before even going inside!
The building was designed by this architect called Frank Gehry, and honestly! It's like a giant sculpture you can walk through - the building is an art piece or preview of what is held inside. There's even this 30ft high metal spider sculpture outside called "Maman" (mummy) with her marble egg sack designed by the French artist Louise Bourgeois. Funny enough, I saw one of her sisters in Japan many years ago! This sculpture represents fear, protection and something in between from the life experience of the artist herself with her own mother.
Inside is just as impressive - these massive open spaces with super high ceilings and art everywhere! The space itself is worth the ticket price alone. There's something about walking through those flowing galleries that just makes you feel part of something big.
My favorite part, I have to admit, was one of the 1st exhibitions we saw on the ground floor: "The Matter Of Time." Huge steel metal work by Richard Serra (1938-2024) where you can walk in between, touch, feel and have all your senses confused and lost. Absolutely mind-blowing!
If you tavel in the region of Bilbao I highly recommend a visit to The Guggenheim Museum.
Thanks for reading.
