Labubu- the good, the bad and the ugly.

Wednesday, 25 June 2025

Let’s talk about Labubu that mischief-filled, big-eyed creature that’s taken the world of designer toys by storm. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just dipped a toe into the art toy pool, you’ve probably heard whispers (or screams) about Labubu and the chaos it brings. Here's my unfiltered take on the madness.

The Good: A Mischievous Masterpiece

First, let’s give credit where it’s due. Labubu, created by artist Kasing Lung and produced by Pop Mart, is an absolute work of art. Each figure is a quirky blend of cuteness and chaos — a goblin with charm, a monster with style. The variety of designs, from pirates to seasonal releases to collabs with other characters, keeps collectors coming back for more.

  • Artistry: Every detail — from the textured fur to the expressive eyes — shows off real craftsmanship.
  • Limited Editions: The thrill of the chase is real. Blind boxes, rare pulls, and chases make each unboxing feel like a mini lottery.
  • Community: Labubu has built a die-hard fandom. There’s a shared joy (and sometimes agony) that makes collecting feel communal.

The Bad: Wallets Beware

As with anything popular, success breeds demand, and demand drives prices way up. What starts as a £12 blind box can turn into a £250+ aftermarket hunt  especially for limited runs or rare colorways.

  • Scalpers are a real issue. Some folks hoard releases just to resell at 5x the price.
  • Blind box frustration: It's a gamble  and if you're hunting a specific figure, it can feel like a money pit.
  • Regional releases: Some of the best Labubus are Asia-exclusive, leaving international fans scrambling (and paying international shipping + customs fees).

The Ugly: FOMO & Toy Addiction

Let’s be honest — the Labubu craze can become an obsession, and not always in a healthy way. The FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is real. People line up for hours, crash online stores in seconds, and spend ridiculous amounts just to keep up.

  • Toxic buying culture: Some collectors go overboard, blowing budgets just to "complete the set."
  • Resentment in the community: Hardcore fans sometimes gatekeep or turn snobby, especially when new collectors jump in.
  • Quality control slips: Occasionally, you get a figure with bad paint jobs, poor packaging, or missing accessories —and Pop Mart customer service can be hit-or-miss.

Final Thoughts: Is Labubu Worth the Hype?

Absolutely — but with a few caveats.

Labubu is chaotic good. It’s a brilliant design, a fun hobby, and a gateway into the wider world of art toys. But it’s also a slippery slope into overspending, frustration, and toxic collecting if you’re not careful.

If you can collect for the joy — not the hype or resale valueif you love the design, the creativity, and the community that surrounds it. Just keep your expectations (and your budget) in check, and you’ll find it a wonderfully weird companion in the world of collectibles.

And yes ...I have my eye on one or two  (on Vinted) because why not ;)

If you own one or hundred tell me all about it.
