Sometimes in life you plan to visit a little place, not expecting much, and then somehow that place steals your heart. This happened a few weeks ago when I was on holiday in beautiful Cornwall. It’s one of my husband’s and my favourite UK staycation destinations. Truly, what is not to love about Cornwall.
On our final morning, the car was already packed because it was both our last day and our “back on the road” journey home to the Cotswolds. For one last moment of holiday, we decided to visit Boscastle, a tiny coastal village that had been highly recommended by our family. We made a small detour, curious to see what this place had to offer.
As soon as we arrived, Boscastle completely stunned me. The landscape, the harbour, the surrounding cliffs, the traditional Cornish cottages, everything felt like stepping into a postcard. Don’t expect a large seaside town. Boscastle is small, quiet and wonderfully unspoiled, but its size doesn’t take away from its beauty. If anything, it makes the experience even more magical.
The little stream rolling down the hill, the stone cottages, the harbour with a couple of boats anchored, the deep blue water and the dramatic cliffs all create a scene that feels almost cinematic. The folded stone formations are extraordinary. You can see the long geological history written in the cliffs, shaped by unimaginable natural forces over millions of years. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop and stare.
Boscastle also has charming pottery shops, small art galleries, independent souvenir shops and of course a National Trust presence. It isn’t overwhelmed with touristy shops, just the right amount to feel welcoming without losing its authenticity. And let’s not forget the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, which absolutely deserves its own post. Keep an eye out for that one.
If you ever find yourself driving through North Cornwall, make sure you stop at Boscastle. It’s tiny, peaceful, atmospheric and unforgettable. A perfect little detour you won’t regret.
