24 hrs In Lincoln

Wednesday 2 October 2019

Few weeks ago I went to visit my best friend before he was off again travelling around the world. When he's not in one of his adventures, he usually go back to his home town; Lincoln. We decided, at the last minute, to pay him a visit and stay over night in a local hotel.
I have to say I was not expected to see Lincoln being such a lovely city. In all honestly I did not know what to expect? So it was a lovely surprise to find a city that got everything to spend a nice weekend away.
So what does Lincoln have that you should definitely spend at least 24 hours there? Here my 6 highlights:

Old Lincoln cobbled streets
Take a walk and discover Lincoln cobbled street , filled with independents shops, restaurant, cute coffee store and much more. I felt completely in  love with the houses and shops architecture. Also there is 2 markets one being the Farmers' market takes place on every 3 rd Saturday on Castle Hill and also the Makers' market (which we had the chance to discover) on every 1 st Saturday of every month on Castle Hill too.
Shops
Even so we did not really did any shopping, I still had my eyes opened and Lincoln offers a wide variety of shopping experience, but really what stood out for me was the many independents but cute shops at every corner of the old town part, from jewellery, to toys, sweets, clothes and everything else in between. Also some are pure Instagram background heaven so you just for that do pay a visit.

The Castle
Unfortunately we did not get the chance to visit the castle just opposite the Lincoln cathedral, but it is something that you could also consider to visit if you have the time. The construction started in the 11th centre by William The Conqueror on the site of a pre-existing Roman Fortress. The castle is opened at the moment from 10 am until 4 pm and normal admission is £12.60 per adult but if you are a student, disable etc. or with a large group Lincoln Castle do special discount prices.

Lincoln Cathedral
This building is 947 years old (construction started in 1072) and used to be the tallest building in the world from 1311 to 1548! Did you know that this cathedral is actually older than Notre De Dame de Paris in France by 88 years? Well you know now! But if you are to visit this old lady you would be absolutely amazed by the amazing Vault that is just breathtaking,  the absolutely beautiful stained glass windows and especially the x 2 rose windows. Let not mention the 2 twin towers and the larger main one which you can visit at certain time of the day. Just a little note that if you wish to visit the inside of the cathedral it is free after 4 pm and open for about 1 hour.  So worth to wait if you are on a budget.

Experienced the Food
As you would expect Lincoln is filled with hundred of places to eat. From Indian cuisine, Italian, to Thai, Japanese and so on.
During our stay we tried two places:
The Thailand number 1 on Bailgate street. Do reserve your table if you go on a weekend as the place get busy very quickly for being one of the most popular Thai restaurant in central Lincoln.
We also tried Gino's on Gordon Road. This restaurant might not look much from the outside but it was a yummy little surprise at a very affordable price especially their menu deal at £10.95 for 2 dishes. It is well rated on Trip Advisor so go for it!

The Collection Museum
Lincoln is also filled with museums and one that attract us greatly was the The Collection Museum on Danes Terrace. The museum is free (excluding exhibitions) and offer a wide variety of objects or interactions from Lincolnshire's first habitants to contemporary art.
During our visit one exhibition was opened and it was the Dinosaur Encounter which unfortunately was only opened until the 8th of September but let assure other exhibition to visit would be available at through out the whole year.
